The Sun is Bad

The Sun is Bad

Summary

The Sun is Bad is a humorous and absurd animated film from Hong Kong (1988), about a girl battling the sun, portrayed as a climate monster. The film explores both the internal and external struggles of adapting to heat and ends with a surprising twist.

The sound design enhances the visual world through an exaggerated and experimental approach that highlights the film’s humor and absurdity. Using Dolby Atmos, the sound moves dynamically around the space, creating an immersive experience that surrounds the audience.

The SFX layer is dominant and deliberately unrealistic, creating a playful and detailed sound universe that supports the fast-paced visuals and comedic tone. Foley brings the characters closer to the audience by adding tactile and personal sounds to the main character and props, adding intimacy to the film.

The overall goal was to challenge traditional sound design in animation by crafting a maximalist and active audio experience, where both the absence and presence of sound play a key role in telling the story.
